Turns out, though, my cocktail-free stories just don't have the same ring to them. So, I'm crying uncle in this battle of writer vs. margarita, and I'm going to write about whatever I want, dangit! The good news is we have been DOING stuff (mostly with cocktails in hand, of course), so I just might have something to say!
Starting with our EPIC Thursday night.
A few weekends ago on our way to our latest and greatest brunch spot (questionable pink shots when you walk in the door? Check!), we passed the Beacon Theatre. This is a common occurrence since, as you know, we rarely venture far from our sweet little Upper West Side, but this time it caught our eyes.
Styx (oneofthegreatestbandsever) was coming.
It's important that everyone understands we're not freaks, and we realize that we're a couple decades (minimum) too young to even know who Styx is. But, my sister went to a Styx-Foreigner-Kansas concert (I KNOW! Don't even get me started, that lucky dog) and, I quote, it ROCKED HER SOCKS OFF.
Clearly, this was an opportunity not to be missed.
So, Thursday night we got to time-travel all the way back to 1978. In front of dozens of drunk middle-aged fans and backed by graphics straight out of the early '80's (oh hello, pixelated rainbows!), Styx rocked Pieces of Eight and The Grand Illusion cover to cover - or, rather, Side 1 to Side 2. What is a record player, anyway?? And it was HILARIOUS.
And here's what I learned:
1. We are DEFINITELY the youngest Styx fans in Manhattan. At least the youngest who weren't required to be there by their parents, desperate to re-live their dorm room glory days for just one night.
2. Mullets are so not out of style. In fact, they are rampant.
3. Those pants are really tight, man.
4. It's never uncool to spin the synthesizer while you're playing it. Or play it backwards, for that matter. And when your bandmates are doing some classic guitar-eography, all the better.
5. Animated clowns are always scary.
6. Old people concerts are AWESOME because they end by 10:30!! Perfect for me!
7. It ROCKED OUR SOCKS OFF. The end.
This HUGE night out topped off Mom's visit last week, which was, even by our standards, an all out food-drink-Broadway-drink-food-dog watching fest. One for the record books, maybe. And Mom's visit came right on the tail of JULIE's visit, which was also a grand time, but more of the food-drink-drink-food-Mad Libs variety. And THAT was preceded by a quick visit to Colorado for the last wedding of the year, and OF COURSE, that trip was a spectacle all on its own.
Obviously, I need to do an end of summer re-cap. Like I said, we've been busy actually doing stuff (boozing and not boozing). I'll be back soon, I promise. Right now I have to go comb my mullet and play air guitar to some wicked LP's.
